ALL SEASONS COUNSELLING BRISTOL

Why counselling?

There are many reasons people choose to come to counselling.

Currently, the Covid-19 pandemic may have left you feeling isolated or anxious?

Or perhaps you've been mulling things over for a long while and feel now is the moment to explore your thoughts or feelings in more depth?  Others choose to engage with counselling because they feel what they want to explore is too personal to share with their regular support network of family and friends...

* ... maybe you feel stuck in a rut or that life is passing you by?

* ... or you're facing a life transition which feels like a mountain?

* ... perhaps you're carrying the emotional load of relationship breakdown or have been bereaved?

* ... or maybe you carry a nagging sense of not feeling good enough or wonder why you can never say 'No' to others?

* ... perhaps you naturally fall into the role of listener with friends & find there is no space for you to be heard?

Whatever you are going through, counselling can offer support and a fresh perspective, when it feels like no one else understands you or you don't even feel you understand yourself anymore.

Why Counselling?

About Me...

My name is Joanne Hacker.  I'm a person centred integrative counsellor offering one to one counselling for adults.  I offer a safe confidential space where you are welcome to explore whatever you choose.

I am experienced in working with students, NHS employees and with  complex cases.

I also work using the REWIND technique which can positively help those suffering with Post Traumatic Stress or PTSD.  This technique does not require the client to disclose sensitive information.  This minimises the risk of the client being re-traumatized.

The Rewind  technique offers a way of permanently stopping involuntary recall of an event by 'filing' the traumatic event in the correct part of the brain.   Voluntary recall will remain, but you will choose when you recall this information.

What I offer.... and what might counselling feel like?

I work using a person centred and integrative approach which means I will be actively listening to you in a non judgmental, warm and accepting way, while valuing your individuality.

Integrative means, my work is informed by a variety of counselling theories including person centred theory and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). Because I believe 'you' are your own and unique expert, I won’t be telling you what to do, but instead helping you to notice patterns of behaviour which may move you closer to change, gaining confidence and to reconnecting with who you really are. I believe rediscovering your inner sense of self may help you move forward in the direction you desire and ultimately to a more satisfying life.

The counselling space is there for you to be free to express yourself.  All emotions are welcome.  You might want to use the space to say things out loud which you have never shared with anyone else.  That’s ok.  While working at your pace, I will focus on understanding your perception of the world. Once our therapeutic relationship is established I may offer gentle challenge or feedback enabling a different viewpoint on your situation, in order to facilitate your exploration.

It's hard to say exactly how 'you' will find counselling.  It's fair to say that you'll be doing a lot of the talking and it won't feel like a chat in a coffee shop.  Initially this might feel a bit one sided.

Many clients feel a sense of relief as they off load and begin to explore their issues in the presence of a neutral person, but this isn't the case for everyone. It can take a while to feel at ease with your counsellor. For some it feels strange to have their counsellor really listening and hearing what they have to say.

Being 'heard' and 'valued' as the unique person you are could be a new experience for you?  It's normal for clients to feel apprehensive or nervous as they consider counselling or plan to meet their new counsellor for the first time.

Everybody's feelings will be different and that's okay!  I want to normalise but not minimise any emotions you are experiencing as you consider taking that first step on your new journey.

As your counsellor, I'll be alongside, as you navigate and unpick whatever issues you bring to this confidential and empathic counselling space.

REWIND TRAUMA THERAPY

If however you are suffering from post traumatic stress and decide you do not want to disclose what is troubling you, then Rewind may be suitable for you.  Whether  you have suffered several traumatic events in your life or a one off event which is carried with you everyday, the Rewind technique has an 85% success rate, providing closure on traumatic events which have ended though they still impact your life.  This technique minimises the risk of retraumatization and gives you a way of permanently stopping your involuntary recall.
